about us
A lot can happen when two long-distance grandparents get together over coffee! During our chats, we began to realize how different our grandparenting experience was from many of our friends. Instead of giving bear hugs to our grandkids, most of the time we were sending virtual kisses.
Our chats were helpful for both of us. So we decided to start a blog, smiles beyond miles, to offer geographically-challenged grandparents, like us, a place to exchange ideas, inspire new ones and create community.
Then came COVID-19. Suddenly, local grandparents found themselves video chatting, as well. If you’re more local, we welcome you, too, and hope you will share your thoughts with us.
So whether your grandkids are near or far, we hope our blog will lead to joyful connections with your grandkids. We’re delighted you’ve found us!

I’m a saver. Scraps of fabric, shells, buttons. When the kids were growing up, I kept those in the Craft Box. Fast forward to today. Who would think a 90’s craft box could become a daily routine with my grands hundreds of miles away!
My most special moments as a pediatric nurse practitioner turned heathcare tech and yoga teacher have been working with parents and their kids. But with all those experiences, being a “Savta”(grandma) tops it all! I am excited to share the magic of being a long-distance grandparent and the ways we can virtually connect.

I‘ve always loved creating things. Growing up, I was famous for staining countertops and artistic messes. Over time, I realized that art could be both expressive and healing. So I began my career as an art therapist, and moved into education. Through the years, I’ve taught and directed educational programs for students from toddlers to retirees.
Now, I’m a proud “Bubbe” (grandma) to two grandchildren who live on the opposite coast. As a long-distance grandparent; I draw on my creativity mixed with a good dose of flexibility, of course! My grandkids inspire me to find new ways to connect with them. I hope smiles beyond miles will inspire you, too.
